So what's whey protein? Well many people in the fitness industry recommend it and use but what's the point if you don't know what it does and if you really need it at all.
Whey protein is actually a bi-product that is produced when cow's milk is used to make cheese. Sounds strange I know but it actually has the highest biological value of any known protein based product, hence now being so popular with athletes and body builders.
Whey Protein Creatine
Up until now it has been difficult for body builders to reach their recommended daily intake of protein. But with the technology available today the whey can be filtered out and made available as a commercial supplement.
But, do we really need it?
Yes and no. Look if you're diet isn't a healthy one then adding whey protein to your diet won't help you. Like any supplement it should be used just to complement your already healthy eating habits, and not replace whole meals altogether.
If your daily routine involves strenuous exercise or work then 1 - 2 whey protein drinks can help rebuild your muscles, and count towards you daily protein needs. It's best to have one after a workout as this is when your muscles need it the most so it can be absorbed quicker.
I guess it can also be used for its convenience factor, as they are quick and easy to prepare and use as a tasty snack in between wholesome meals. Also, whey protein powders usually have no saturated fat, usually found in whole eggs and meat.
Another factor you should look out for is the Biological value (BV) of whey. BV is the measurement of how efficiently the protein can be absorbed and used in the body for muscle growth. The bench mark used for BV are eggs and they stand at a value of 100. All other protein sources are rated above or below that standard. The higher the BV value the more efficiently absorbed into the system for repair and growth.
Milk protein - 85 BV Beef protein - 75 BV Whey protein - between 104 and 170 BV
So overall, what is whey protein? Well it can be a good supplement to complement (and I stress complement) a good eating and exercise plan. If you're goal is muscle gain, then I would try experimenting with some whey protein. Even though it's not entirely necessary and you can still build muscle with out it, it can also count for a nutritious snack in the form of a milk shake after a hard earned session pumping iron at the gym.
